For the past 8 years, Attorney Justin Rosas has had the privilege of being the regional coordinator for the High School Mock Trial Competition through the Classroom Law Project. The competition was held on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Jackson County Courthouse. There were 8 teams of high schoolers competing for 2 spots in the state competition.
Attorney Rosas is honored by the chance to instruct and lead students in this program. The judges included Federal Magistrate Judge Mark Clarke, Presiding Circuit Court Judge Tim Gerking, Circuit Court Judge Benjamin Bloom, Justice Court Judge Joe Charter and a host of prominent local attorneys. The competition had volunteers from the community including Lieutenant Scott Logue of the Central Point Police Department. Congratulations to St. Mary's and Grants Pass High School for winning the Mock Trial Competition.
The Classroom Law Project Encourages Youth to Participate in Democratic Society
Classroom Law Project is a non-profit organization that was established in 1983. It is comprised of lawyers, educators, individuals, and civic leaders who are passionate about helping youth become active members of society. Using a variety of civics and law-related educational programs and workshops, Classroom Law Project is able to reach more than 880 teachers and 63,000 students throughout Oregon annually.
The high school mock trial competition is designed to give students a chance to see what the democratic law process is really like. It provides a hands-on experience to help students increase in their critical thinking and oral skills, as well as their ability to work with others.
This program is not designed to create new lawyers. It is designed to help students be active thinkers and participants in democratic society, and to make a difference in the world. Attorney Rosas is proud to partner with Classroom Law Project to coordinate these mock trials and to teach students how to engage in society.
